| The American Shakespeare Repertory is
dedicated to capturing the glory of Shakespeare's plays in the context
of the repertory in which they were originally performed. Its
productions will explore the unique resonances and discoveries made
possible when the plays are juxtaposed against each other; against the
other playwrights of the Elizabethan age; and against the multitude of
works throughout time which inspired them and have been inspired by
them. |

SHAKESPEARE AROUND TOWN - LOVE'S LABOURS LOST University of Minnesota Dept. of Theatre Arts & Dance/Guthrie BFA Actor Training Program presentsby William Shakespeare Directed by Kenneth Noel Mitchell February 26 - March 7
Don't miss your chance to see the
senior company of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor
Training Program showcase their training in a swinging and satirical
rendition of William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost. When
four friends make a pact to abandon all earthly pleasures – most
importantly women – in pursuit of scholarship, they quickly realize
that love doesn’t play by the rules. As each man falls head-over-heels,
this madcap comedy will send you on a hilarious adventure of mishaps
and misunderstandings. With cunning wordplay and sharp wit, Love’s Labour’s Lost will leave you and your students laughing and loving this show!
Love’s Labour’s Lost is
an adaptation by director Kenneth Noel Mitchell. Set in the Roaring
‘20s, Mitchell’s version of one of Shakespeare’s most unique comedies
embodies the drama, energy and playfulness of young love. Pulling
inspiration from other Shakespearean comedies, Love’s Labour’s Lost is a no holds barred battle of the sexes – just as Shakespeare intended.

READING 8 - ROMEO & JULIET On February 24th the Complete Readings of William Shakespeare continue with Romeo & Juliet.
Celebrate a belated Valentine's Day with Shakespeare's star-crossed
lovers. With fresh young performances from teen actors Emma Mayer and
Jordon Johnson, American Shakespeare Repertory presents an uncut Romeo
& Juliet, allowing audiences the rare opportunity to enjoy the
secret drama surrounding the theater's most tragic lovers! | January 27th, 2010
SCHEDULE CHANGE! American Shakespeare Repertory is shifting the scheduling of its readings on February 17th and February 24th. On February 17th, The Rape of Lucrece -- Shakespeare's epic poem -- will be performed in an intimate reading. On February 24th, Romeo & Juliet (formerly scheduled for February 17th) will be performed. Both readings will be sponsored by Theatre Unbound's production of Expecting Isabel, and will remain in the originally scheduled venue of the Lowry Lab Theater. Troilus & Cressida, which was originally scheduled for February 24th, will be re-scheduled during a later sequence. | January 21st, 2010
READING 6 - EDWARD III On January 27th, for the first time in ten years and for only the second time in history, Shakespeare's Edward III
is coming to a stage in the Twin Cities! Or is it Shakespeare's at all?
Although its place in the canon has been disputed for centuries, over
the past twenty years Edward III
has become widely recognized as one of the Bard's lost masterpieces.
This is a rare opportunity to see the play in live performance. Join us
for the sixth play in the Complete Readings of William Shakespeare.
| January 17th, 2010
READING 5 - RICHARD III On January 20th, the Complete Readings of William Shakespeare continues with Richard III at the Theatre in the Round. Richard's body is eaten away by the cankerous evil that devours his
soul. And like its would-be monarch, the fair isle of England slowly
rots from the inside. One of Shakespeare's most popular plays is given
a fresh treatment, as the American Shakespeare Repertory explores the
progressive deformity of a hunchbanked toad, weaving a spider's web of
deceit in a political thriller of lust, murder, and betrayal. | January 16th, 2010
AUDITIONS - SECOND SEQUENCE The American Shakespeare Repertory is casting an acting company for the Second Sequence of the Complete Readings of William Shakespeare. The series -- which will present every poem, play, and sonnet -- continues from March 2010 thru October 2010.
WHEN: January 30th (Saturday) 12:00 to 5:00 pm
WHERE: Minneapolis Public Library - Central 300 Nicollet Mall - Minneapolis, MN 55401 Second Floor Conference Room N-202
HOW: E-mail
hamlet9000@thealexandrian.net for an appointment. If possible, include
or link to a digital copy of your resume/headshot. (Please bring
hardcopies to your audition.)
PREPARE: 1-2 classical monologues no more than 2 minutes in length. The audition will also include a cold reading.
DETAILS: Each
play will receive 4-5 rehearsals before the public reading. The
rehearsal schedule will be flexible and depend on the availability of
the actors involved.
We are looking for a company of actors who
can perform across multiple shows, but will also be casting on a
show-by-show basis (so those who are only available/interested in one
or some of the readings should still try out!).
Rehearsals will
take place in south Minneapolis. Our performances are sponsored and
hosted by local theater companies -- including Theatre in the Round,
Walking Shadow Theater, Theater Unbound, and Gremlin Theater -- with
our final performance schedule for the Second Sequence waiting to be
finalized.
These positions are unpaid.
The role of Hamlet has been cast. All other roles are available. | December 15th, 2009

READING 4 - TWELFTH NIGHT On December 16th, the Complete Readings of William Shakespeare continues with Twelfth Night at the South
High Skybox Theater. Is love born of the eye or of the heart?
Shakespeare's Viola stands at the center of this tempest-tossed
question, presenting one of Shakespeare's finest cross-dressing
heroines in a comedy of mistaken identities; drunken buffoonery; and
love misplaced, misprized, and mislaid. | December 3rd, 2009
READING 3 - CORIOLANUS On December 9th, the Complete Readings of William Shakespeare continues with Coriolanus at the Open Eye
Figure Theater. For T.S. Eliot, it was the greatest of Shakespeare's
tragedies. For Brecht, it captured his ideals 400 years before he
shaped them. It's a political thriller and a horrific war story; it's a
tale of personal hubris and the common shortcoming; it's simplistic
jingoism and a complex portrait of life. Coriolanus stands as one of
the great enigmas of the Bard, challenging artist and audience alike to
find meaning in its madness. Join us in unraveling the mysteries of one
of the least-produced of Shakespeare's masterpieces. | November 24th, 2009
READING 2 - TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA On December 2nd, the Complete Readings of William Shakespeare continues with Two Gentlemen of Verona at
the Pillsbury House Theater. Best friends forever, Proteus and
Valentine, are about to discover the bright lights -- and crazy hijinx
-- of the big city. Join us for Shakespeare's original romantic comedy:
See the birth of his transgendered heroines; idyllic forests; and
fate-crossed loves. | November 18th, 2009
CRAIG JOHNSON JOINS THE COMPLETE READINGS! Local theater favorite Craig Johnson, who recently directed Much Ado About Nothing at Theatre in the Round and appeared in Othello at Park Square, will be joining the Complete Readings of William Shakespeare as the Master of Ceremonies on November 23rd, 2009 during our reading of Macbeth!
Johnson will provide an historic and inimitable introduction to the
entire series with a reading from the Condell and Heminges introduction
to the First Folio. | PARTNERING SPONSORS |
| The
Complete Readings of William Shakespeare will present every
play, poem, and sonnet (along with a sampling of the apocrypha) from 2009-2011. It represents the
unique opportunity to experience in performance all of Shakespeare's
masterpieces, including those rarely or never seen, in a way that
hasn't been possible since the King's Men originally performed them 400
years ago.
